Track I is the entry level of our certification program, and the starting point for anyone seeking any form of personal or business accreditation.  It is a prerequisite for groomers wishing to proceed to Tracks II and III, and consists of two separate modules, each providing their own levels of certification:

1. Certified Salon Professional (CSP)

This certification is designed for all  salon and doggy day-care staff, bathers, managers and business owners. It is also a pre-requisite for groomers wishing to continue on to module 2.  You must be able to verify having completed 300 hours of practical experience in the pet care industry before undertaking this module.

Comprising one 150 page A5 training manual, it provides education about professional ethics and behaviour; safety and first aid; health, diseases, vaccinations and zoonoses; sanitation and hygiene procedures; chemical safety; safe and appropriate handling of dogs entering and leaving the salon, crates, baths and drying stations; lifting mechanics; bathing and drying equipment and methods; dog behaviour and anatomy of skin, hair, eyes, ears, nails and anal glands; as well as practical bathing and drying techniques and how to recognise problems and bring these to the attention of pet owners.

Participants are required to pass two written tests and one practical examination bathing and drying a dog using appropriate equipment and handling techniques.

Upon successful completion of this module, you may use the letters CSP after your name and incorporate the IPG logo in all your promotional material.

 2. Certified Professional Groomer (CPG)

This certification accredits entry level groomers able to demonstrate the skills required to perform basic, everyday grooms safely and efficiently.  It is also a prerequisite for more advanced groomers wishing to go on to Track II.  You must be able to verify having completed 600 hours of experience in the pet care industry before undertaking this module.

Comprising one 140 page A5 training manual and one 20-minute DVD, it provides an introduction to IPG’s SmartStyle grooming system; education about selection, use and sanitation of grooming tools; equipment ergonomics and safety; groomer health and exercises for injury prevention; stress-free handling methods during grooming; difficult dogs and grooming cats; further details about skin and hair; emergency management; liability insurance; tips for attracting and keeping better clients and maintaining mutually beneficial client relations.

Participants are required to pass two written tests and one practical examination demonstrating a simple “kennel trim” safely and efficiently on a long-haired dog using clippers and snap-on combs (for example, appropriate breeds include Maltese, Shih Tzu, Poodle, Bichon Frise or similar breeds or mixed breeds).

Upon successful completion of this module, you may use the letters “CPG” after your name, display an IPG-provided “Certified Professional Groomer on Staff” sign outside your premises and include our logo in all your promotional material.

How are assessments conducted?

IPG’s Australian Certifier, Nicky Renwood, travels throughout Australia and New Zealand assessing practical examinations. Written tests may be conducted in front of Nicky on these occasions, or you may request to complete them in advance in front of a proctor and either post/email them to Nicky or hand them over in person on the day of your examination.  Group examinations are organised each year at major centres in order to minimise travel fees, or Nicky is prepared to travel to individual salons wherever possible, for an additional charge.  A score of 86% or higher is required to pass all tests.

How much does it cost?

The total cost of Track I is AUD $455.00 .  This includes 6 months’ membership of IPG.  (Alternatively, if you have already completed your Salon Details certificate as part of our old accreditation system, you can upgrade this to Track I for $260.00).  These prices do not include assessor travel charges, as these are calculated on an individual basis.
